Shakhtar Donetsk and CSKA Moscow face Scandinavian top teams in Copa del Sol.
The top sides from Ukraine and Russia are the final confirmations for the upcoming club tournament in football in Marbella 3-12 February 2010. Shakhtar Donetsk will kick off against Norwegian Molde FK on 3 February and CSKA Moscow enter the group stage against Swedish IF Elfsborg on 4 February.
The 8 teams from 5 European countries are now complete for the inaugural edition of the Copa del Sol tournament to be played in Marbella, Spain, 3-12 February.
The reigning UEFA Cup champions Shakhtar Donetsk from Ukraine dominate their group in the UEFA Europa League. The Russian cup winners CSKA Moscow are qualified for the play offs in the UEFA Champions League. Sweden is represented by the winner and runner-up from the national league (Allsvenskan) 2008 – Kalmar FF and IF Elfsborg. FC Copenhagen is close to advance in the UEFA Europa League and together with the national SAS-liga leader Odense BK they represent Denmark in Copa del Sol. The groups are completed by the winner and runner-up of the Norwegian league – Rosenborg BK and Molde FK.
Introduction Copa del Sol provides for excellent training and match opportunities for the Scandinavian club teams during the challenging winter break. With the ambition to become the most interesting pre season tournament for club teams from Sweden, Denmark and Norway, the intention is to provide a top level training environment and matches at a high international level.
Copa del Sol is played between 3-12 February, one month before the Scandinavian league openings, which provides for a final preparatory window and optimal test for the teams.
Copa del Sol does not only provide an opportunity for sportive development during pre season, but it also guarantees additional revenues by offering a total of SEK 2.000.000 in tournament prize money.
The Arena Copa del Sol is played at the Estadio Municipal in Marbella (capacity 9.000) and normally the home ground for Marbella´s own team, UD Marbella. The 8 visiting teams stay and practice at different training facilities along the Spanish sunny coast and at close proximity to Marbella.
Format The 8 teams are divided into two groups (Red and Blue) for a round robin followed by placement matches, whereby the winners of each group face off in the final. A total of 16 matches are played in Copa del Sol, with 4 matches per team. The winning team will receive SEK 600.000 and total prize monies amount to SEK 2.000.000.
The Group stage is introduced on Wednesday 3 February with the Final played on Friday 12 February:
